What's the Latest on the Georgetown Branch Project
Our specialized consultants are now 'on board', and have joined the Georgetown Branch Planning Committee.
Our Project Manager, Mr. Mahendra Shah of The MMM Group is in the process of developing a detailed Project Charter, to ensure that the work proceeds as expected, and that the project remains on schedule and within budget.
We will be working with our Interior Designers, Ella Mamiche and Nihan Basak of ZAS Interiors to develop a design concept that will guide us in the choice of colours, floor and wall treatments, furnishings and fitments, etc. We have a workshop planned for March 30th where all staff will have an opportunity to contribute to this process.
We are developing our detailed floor plans with the architect through a staff-based group called the “Form Meets Function Committee”.
We are determining what kind of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system we will incorporate—we are considering a number of energy efficient options including geothermal.
We are confirming the details associated with the Holy Cross Church and Rectory, which will function as our temporary site. Aligning the schedules will be our greatest challenge.
And finally, we will be exploring the infrastructure funding available through the federal and provincial governments once the guidelines for the various programs are released (they are expected by April).

Project on Track!
Staff have been very busy reviewing and recommending specialized consultants for the Georgetown Branch Project. Late last year, “Requests for Proposals” were issued for a Project Manager, Interior Designer and Capital Campaign Consultant for the Georgetown Branch Project. Interview teams were established, and firms short-listed, interviewed and evaluated. Interview teams recommended firms to the Georgetown Branch Planning Committee based on the established evaluation criteria. The Planning Committee endorsed the recommendations, and in February, the Library Board approved the recommended consultants for interior design services, project management services and the production of a capital campaign feasibility study.
The successful interior design firm is ZAS Interiors Inc. This firm has wide ranging experience and has demonstrated creative, innovative thinking in their designs. ZAS has won many design awards, and the lead designer, Ms. Elizabeth Marmiche has completed many well received public library projects. ZAS is currently designing Milton Public Library’s new Beaty Branch.
The successful project management firm is The MMM Group. MMM is a multi-national, multi-service firm and with support staff to assist if necessary, including Civil Engineers and LEED accredited professionals. The Designated Project Manager, Mr. Mahendra Shah, has a Master’s Degree in Architecture (1979) and a Project Management Professional Certification (1993). As an architect for over 35 years, Mr. Shah has a strong understanding of the design and construction process. He has also worked on a number of public library projects for Hamilton, including one very similar project which involved the purchase of the house next door and re-location to a temporary site. Mr. Shah has a reputation for bringing projects in on budget and on time.

A New Vision for Georgetown Branch
The Board has approved a new vision for the Georgetown Branch Library Project. Please let us know what you think!
The vision for the renovated/expanded Georgetown Branch begins with the customer. Everything that we have done and will continue to do in a larger, better appointed branch will be directed by the needs of our customers. We are committed to monitoring these needs over time, and to adjusting as needs change. We will ensure that the new Georgetown Branch is flexible enough to accommodate changes in our social, economic, and technical environments.
The renovated/expanded Georgetown Branch will serve as a successful and inspiring model of sustainability through the design and operation of the building, and through the delivery of service. We will be a teaching tool for members of the community seeking greener alternatives.
The new Georgetown Branch will support a diversity of needs. In our goal to be inclusive, the building and the services within will be fully accessible, and will appeal to people of all ages, abilities and interests. The Library will be known for its ease of use, convenience and comfort, as well as the professional and attentive service; it will consistently exceed customer expectations.
The Library will offer a range of service options from self-help technology to staff-assisted service. The expanded collection will include traditional and state-of-the art resources. The Library will be viewed as an effective information gateway, where Library staff are the “ultimate search engines”. Special attention will be given to the following objectives:
· To develop strong literacy skills and foster a love of reading in children
· To provide a safe and engaging place for youth to learn and interact
· To recognize the needs of an aging population
· To support local small business operators through relevant and current information
· To supply popular materials in a timely manner and in a variety of formats
· To preserve and provide access to precious local history resources
· To showcase the best of new technology without compromising user-friendliness
The Library will be a recognized destination, a “third place” outside of home, work or school, where people can freely gather to relax, meet others, and exchange ideas. Increasing numbers of people using the Library will contribute to the vitality of the downtown area.
Through careful stewardship by the Board and staff, the Library will demonstrate fiscal responsibility and provide good value for the taxpayer’s dollar. The Library will continue to partner with complementary service providers such as the Recreation and Parks Department to maximize the funds available, and to capitalize on opportunities for collaboration on community development projects.
The renovated/expanded Georgetown Branch will celebrate the importance of arts and culture to Halton Hills residents and will be a source of civic pride for many years to come.
